Turn a minus into a plus. Invest in companies making locking gas caps.

Back in 2005 when gas prices were first starting to jump up, my wife discovered that she wasn't getting nearly the same number of miles per tank. After figuring that it was due to siphoning, we got a locking gas cap, and haven't had a problem since.

I wonder if it will get so bad that it'll be like Mad Max, and car gas caps will become booby-trapped?

I think it may be a problem in areas that already have higher crime rates than we do in rural NH (which is damn near anywhere else) but even then I am not worried. If I lock my driver's door, it also locks all of the other doors, the liftgate, and the door over the gas cap.

There is another reason I am unlikely to be affected. The type of vehicles I drive are easily overlooked in favor of something with less rust, a better radio, and a larger gas tank. I mean, would you risk a tetanus shot for a dribble of gas from my car or would you siphon from the shiny F-150 next to me with the ginormous tank?

I hope not, because that could be a real burden on the (underfunded) healthcare system. Just to illustrate the danger, I remember reading a joke about some guy who accidentally siphoned out of the septic tank of a caravan and was horribly sick... so be careful.

I'm not worried about it, but yes some stupid kid tried that once with my car and accidently swallowed some of it, and I found him next to my car with the gas cap on the ground writhing in pain, so I took him to the hospital where luckily they helped him, then the police came (not because I called them...the hospital did) and tried to arrest him. I told them I thought he suffered enough, and his dad made him mow my lawn for almost a year. LOL I bet he never did that again....The same kid a year earlier had stolen my car radio....His dad made him give it back after the gas incident.

Just buy a locking gas cap for $5 at the local store, they aren't always the easiest things to get off, so they are a nice deterrant.

I have never been a victim of that crime and I am not worried about it over much. More likely gas and run will get worse and I'll have to go inside to pay again and that sucks.

It already has here in our area, one company had his whole fleet emptied by professional gas siphoners. It is so easy to buy locking gas caps, I have a hard time feeling sorry for him.

The worst thing is that they are now punching holes in the bottom of the tank and completely ruining the car.
