  • Adomaitis is NOT a Russian surname. It is of Lithuanian descent, and has nothing to do with Russians or Russia. In answer to the comment about my prior answer, the name "Adomaitis" is a patronymic-meaning, a name derived from the fathers name by means of a suffix, usually "aitis", "Aitis" would be "son of", so the name Adomaitis means "Son of Adam". In olden times, "ordinary" people did not use family names, they just used first names, along with their occupations or other idenfying factors, such as Jonas the blacksmith, or Tomas the cobbler. In official documents, the people were noted by village, such as Jonas from the village of (xyz). Thus the sons of Gintautas are called Gintautaitis, plural Gintautaičiai, the sons of Geidvilas are called Geidvilaitis, plural Geidvilaičiai, etc. For a long time these were true patronymics, i.e., Peter the son of Antanas would be called Petras Antanaitis, but Peter's son John would be called Jonas Petraitis. Gradually the name became fixed and did not change from generation to generation. Adomaitis is an old Lithuanian name, which you may see with different endings, depending on marital status, etc. For example, Adomaityte would be an unmarried young lady, Adomaitiene would be married lady as in Mrs. Adomaitis (wife of Adomaitis), etc. On a historical note, Lithuania was forcibly taken over and was part of the U.S.S.R. but is free now. Therefore, many people think that anything in the USSR was "Russian" which is not the case. Russia was a country IN the USSR, but the USSR was many different countries, most of which had their own languages, cultures, and names. Most LIthuanians would find it offensive to be considered "Russian", my maiden name is Adomaitis, and when I saw this question-well, let me say, I was happy to CLEAR up this matter. My mother was a refugee during the war who escaped the communists, and most of my family was killed by the Russians. This is a sensitive issue, as you may imagine. Lithuanian is one of the oldest Indo-European languages in the world.
