  • It's actually a surname of Armenian ancestry. Can also be spelled Ajemian, Ajemyan, Adjemian, Ajamian, or Ajamyan depending on the transliteration. Usually, Armenians from Armenia or Russia use the -yan ending whereas Armenians in the diaspora use -ian ending. Coming from Arabic, "ajem/ajam" means: "Persian/one from Persia". The ending "-ian" or "yan" is an Armenian ending meaning, "of." I am an Adjemian myself :) I've always been told that about my last name. It's interesting to think that my ancestors were from Persia some two thousand years ago! Pretty interesting stuff.
