  • Shingles is the manifestation of the herpes zoster virus that lays dormant in the spinal canal after someone has experienced chicken pox. It is not, as is popularly believed, that adult form of chicken pox. However, only someone who's had chicken pox may contract shingles. After a child who's had chicken pox matures, the virus may manifest due to stress, illness or other factors. It usually affects one side of the body -- often the torso but sometimes the head and face -- with scarring red marks and blisters. These can be accompanied by extreme nerve pain, which can last months and sometimes become a chronic condition. Shingles is NOT contagious in any way. It can be easily treated with antiviral medication. In 2006, a vaccine for shingles was approved. You can read more about shingles (which I can tell you from personal experience is no fun) at the following link: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/shingles/shingles.htm
  • Shingles is horrible! I've had several family members and friends who have had it. It seems to last forever. One family member has been suffereing with it for 6 months now and he can't sleep, he is inpain constantly. He has tried what the doctor says and it doesn't do anything. He's happier doing natural remedies, like colloidial silver and some herbs. THey are keeping the pain bearable for him. It's painful to see him suffer, can't imagine having it.
  • It is actually infectious, especially to people who hasn t acquired chickenpox yet and special precautions for pregnant women...and as we know it is a recurrence of the the said Varicella Zoster virus and its acquired via the oronasal route so it wld help if we practice wearing masks or something....its also very painful once a particular dermatome on your body is affected..frequently at the back or jst under the chest part...Supportive treatment is the most common way to treat since it will naturally resolve so rest, proper diet and some pain relievers shld be given if needed.
  • Yes shingles is caused by the herpes virus and it can never actually be curable. It will stay dormant in you for ever. Treatments are multiple - for example see http://hubpages.com/hub/Shingles-treatment - and can reduce the pain and inflamation. It is only contagious if you have never had chicken pox, otherwise you are safe. See http://hubpages.com/hub/Shingles-contagious
  • Shingles is a reactivation of the herpes zoster virus (varicella-zoster virus, or VZV). This same virus causes the childhood illness chickenpox. The chickenpox virus (varicella) remains in a dormant state in the body in the root of nerves that control sensation. In about 1 out of 5 people, the virus "wakes up," often many years after the chickenpox infection. The virus then travels along a sensory nerve into the skin causing a painful rash known as shingles. No one knows for sure what causes the chickenpox virus to become activated to cause shingles. Some possibilities include stress, fatigue, a weakened immune system (This may be age-related, disease-related, or a drug-related decrease in ability to keep the chickenpox virus in an inactive state.), cancer, radiation treatments, and injury of the skin where the rash occurs http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/shingles/DS00098 http://www.shingles.com/index.jsp?usertrack.filter_applied=true&NovaId=7852773773959714057 http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/shingles/shingles.htm
  • Yes! lots of viruses are caused by herpes viruses. it is not 'curable' because its a virus...it has to run its course. Its not contagious in the same way other viruses are however. You have to have had chicken pox in order to develop shingles.
  • Shingles is caused by the Chicken Pox virus. No you have to wait for the attaack to go away and yes it is contagious
