  • No, no-one expected Blair to serve a full term, and knew that Gordon Brown would be his sucessor. However Brown should probably call a general election after a year or so.
  • In Britain we don't elect a Prime Minister, we elect our local Members of Parliament (MPs). Tony Blair was elected as an MP by the voters of the Sedgefield constituency in County Durham, so it's only those voters that are directly affected by the implication of this question. Anyway, what difference will it make, they're all politicians and who ever took anything a politician said at face value.
  • I think that we in Australia follow the same system as Britain (correct me if I am wrong) whereby politicians are elected to office by the people, but the Prime Minister is elected by the government representatives within parliament. Therefore, as long as Tony Blair remains a member of parliament, he can legally hand the reigns over to the next elected Prime Minister. There is no need for a by-election for his seat, for he has not vacated it. Nor is there a need for a general election, as replacing the PM is an internal party decision.
