When i turn my ps3 power switch on the red light comes on but when i try to actually turn it on it turns green then shuts off completly. anyone got suggestions?

You've got YLOD(Yellow Light of Death). Have the same problem.

i just spoke to sony support..........they say this indicates an over heating problem, leading to component failure in the console.
i was offered a replacement console delivered by courier, as a gesture of goodwill due to the console being out of warranty.
replacement is a factory refurb, same spec, and age.

Check your power-cord for defects.Make sure it's all the way in. If it's not that, you might have to find a new cord.

From what you have said it sounds like you have the YLOD _RED LIGHT ERROR
The main causes are Hardware failure, overheating or wear & tear.
You may need to perform simple maintenance, clean or in some cases adjust settings.

Your PS3 was suffering with red light flashing problem. Cool it down or normal power reset cannot solve the problem. Overheat is one of the reasons. I would check if all the cables are promptly pluged in. Maybe it is also the problem with heating, but than it can be also YLOD. If you wanna repair it, check the steps on http://ylodfixrepair.com.
