  • Short Answer: Yes! Long Answer: Cold sores are a very common illness caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex virus. HSV-1, which is the most common type, usually causes cold sores (oral herpes). HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes. But both types can infect any area of the skin or mucous membranes. Also, the same virus that causes genital herpes can also cause cold sores, therefore oral sex by someone with an outbreak of cold sores can infect the genital region and vice versa (genital herpes on the mouth). Take Care!
  • There are 2 kinds of HSV, but one can not cause the other. You can't get herpes from a cold sore or a cold sore from herpes. Herpes never goes away, whereas a cold sore will be gone in a matter of weeks
