Most modern vehicles have interlock systems that prevent you doing one thing or the other when starting the car, changing gears with an automatic transmission, and shutting down the car.

Most cars with automatic transmissions will not let you remove the ignition key if the gear selector is not in 'Park' when the engine is turned off. If your car has an automatic, you probably are having problems with an intermittent fault in the transmission interlock system. The fault may be with the switch (most likely), a connector, or the wiring harness.
