I would say pepper and ginger, mainly because selling means what sells in China, the biggest economy. They use black pepper and ginger most commonly.

As Shopping Sheryl rightly pointed out, saffron is the most expensive as it is made from the pollen of a variety of crocus. It takes a lot of flowers to produce even a small amount of saffron, so it has always been more expensive than gold or diamonds. To achieve a similar result, most people used turmeric.

  • Hey: to the butthead who gave me negs: do you know ANYTHING about spices? Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world, and is used in the cuisine of many cultures. It is quite popular. It's quite possible it's up there on the sell list.

Only ignorant chickens**ts drop negs and run.

as a professional retail spice merchant, i can tell you, depending upon the packaging -- 1 lb. bulk, 4 oz jar, etc. -- the 10 top spices are cinnamon, cayenne, black pepper (peppercorns), cumin, ginger, thyme, parsley, oregano, garlic. certain products, sell more by the pound, e.g. chocolate. peppercorns & cumin are by far, very high movers. (based on sales & computer analysis.)

The two top selling spices in the world are PEPPER and CUMIN. (Salt isn't a spice or an herb) Peppercorns are, by monetary value, the most widely traded spice in the world, accounting for 20 percent of all spice imports in 2002. Cumin is second.

86% of all the spices in the world come from one country alone- INDIA.
