A phenotype is the outwards appearance of a trait, dictated by a gene in the DNA. If this trait has two genes dictating it, and neither are dominant or recessive, then the phenotype is the intermediate of the two. For example, say there was a gene for a big nose and a gene for a small nose, either one being given to the child by either parent, then the child would have an average nose. This is supposing that neither gene is dominant. Hope this helps! I can try explaining it more if you don't quite get it!
