Why do women with no extenuating circumstances (mastectomy for example) get breast implants?

Some women just want to look better (in their eyes or others) and/or have clothes fit better. More over, they may feel like less of a woman if they have very small breasts. Some even do get mistaken for boys.

Remember, just because they don't look small to you, doesn't mean they aren't. Many small breasted women do a good job of hiding the fact by means of padding and special bras. Unfortunately for them, that doesn't work when they are naked.

And of course, some just believe others will look at them differently and more positively if they have larger breasts.

Kinkstar: Most people who get breast augmentations don't get obscenely large breasts - they're just the ones that you tend to notice. Obviously, different people have different reasons, but not all women get bigger breasts just to look like porn stars or something. And as I say below, people often mistakenly believe that large, natural breasts are implants - especially when a girl or woman is slender like I am and was.

Anonymous: While I have not gotten implants, I have had friends with very small breasts, and I've seen how it affects how it affected how they felt about themselves and even how others treated them. Some were teased, even as adults. And I've also had a lot of male friends who were very open about wanting a woman with "at least a handful".

As I said, I did not get implants, but I did get a reduction - so I can definitely empathize with how hard it is to find clothes that fit and how much it hurts to have others judge based on chest size (in my case, people thought my real boobs were fake and thought I must have had implants to get a lot of male attention, even when I was a young, young teen). So, "judge not" as the saying goes.

Too many of these women have low self-esteem, and think it's far more important to have big breasts than it is to better themselves in ANY other way. Their concept of what makes a woman valuable as a human being (or sexy) is distorted, and they don't get the simple concept of being who you are, and being comfortable within your skin, is what truly makes any person sexy to begin with. Fake anything can never make up for the real deal! EVER!

Sure, many claim they feel better about themselves after the surgery, but they also still haven't worked on what the real problem was to begin with. People notice them more now, and unfortunately, perception is reality. But Hello! Now when they walk into a room it's all about their big t*ts! How awful is that for their so-called better self-esteem? The money would be better spent in building up their self image, making them finally realize what's really important isn't their looks, but how they value themselves in THEIR OWN EYES. There are plenty of smaller breast women in the world, role models that exhibit and prove the fact that big breasts don't make a woman better, prettier, sexier, or any more desired. But the women that continue to get implants, at any and all costs, can't or won't see it that way. Perhaps it's a quick fix, and easier than dealing with issues or reasons why they view themselves as nothing more than an object to be googly-eyed at!

Many women who get implants don't keep up on their required and necessary care to prevent scar tissue from making their breasts become rock hard. This person with poor self image, will age into a worse problem than having had small breasts. Their breasts become gross to touch, or even look at. So obviously fake, it's disgusting. They lost sensitivity from the beginning anyway; got ugly scars all the way around their now dead nipples - that are stuck "on" and usually pointing in opposite directions. As the years go by, and the woman ages, her breasts will look even more unnatural, because they can't possibly have a natural droop destined to come in the years. Oh, but implants are not permanent or made to last forever. They'll have to be redone anywhere from 7-12 years, depending on when you got them and how good your aging genes are treating you. Most women don't think about this in the beginning, figuring it's a concern they'll worry about when they have to - if they have the money! And if the surgery was a bargain before, it will cost more next time, due to age or weight changes and how much scar tissue is built up, as well as concerns with any other health issues that have come up over the years.

This answer is nothing more than a generalization, to provide a basic answer to a question without adding all the complicated factors that would apply to any circumstance in life. Of course, there are valid reasons for women to get breast implants, and I'm not saying all women that seek to get them feel this way about themselves or have mental problems. I just think it's done too often, and for too many wrong reasons, like anything else in the world . . .

Edit: I agree, more women should tell, cause all the "jobs" done are not successful or just great and wonderful. But when you consider the lack of confidence that led them down that path in the first place, it's not gonna happen. Last thing they'd want to do is complain about their big t*ts, not with all the attention, oohs and ahhs compared to life before when no one ever looked twice. I've known several women over the years with implants and have never seen any (not one!) job done good enough that I'd want to get one myself - not that I need it!

I spoke to a woman with implants about this recently. She explained that after she went on a diet and lost a lot of weight her breasts also shrank by 2 cup sizes, and she felt "unfeminine". I don't know, but I guess that old cliche that we feel like we have to live up to a near impossible stereotype of being very slim with large breasts must be true. As a by the by she also mentioned that her parents paid for it, surely a sign that the procedure has become truly commonplace, seeing as most parents aren't even willing for their kids to get a tattoo!

why does society prefer unrealistic ideals when it comes to womens' (and mens') body parts? unreal ideals can only be obtained by unnatural means - or, if it is natural, it is the very few for whom the genetic lottery worked out.

Low self esteem, probably. I know personally of a woman that got implants and a mycrobacteria got into the breast.. They were all healed too. Wound up getting them removed and going on high powered antibiotics for months because the bacteria was in both breast tissue. So, one should really think first.

i had a double mastectomy due to breast cancer - i was a candidate for reconstruction and chose to do so - but I ended up with complications and my doctor had to undo the reconstruction. Anyway, speaking for women with no breasts - try buying clothes. All clothes are made for women with breasts - it is impossible for me to find clothes that look right on me. I've tried a prosthetic, but because of the complications I had, they make my chest swell and are very uncomfortable - so I wear a lot of loose t-shirts.

Women get implants for a number of reasons.

In addition to other reasons listed here, some women get implants after having a child because their breasts begin to sag. They don't like the change in their body so they try and get it back to the way it was before.

besides models/ pornstars & filmstars (to a lesser extent) get a lot more work if they have them done->

therefore "normal people" see more & more on tv etc and they become used to seeing people with them -> and you can see how what used to be an extreme piece of surgery become commonplace, because of the perceived normallity and lower expectation of risk

Pessure from the oversexualized climate that smacks them in the face N,W,E,S it is everywhere! I am leaving one of my fav sites,due to the constant barrage of female nudity,most of it diplayed by women to men. The womens movement is dead.......that simple!

Because women think men care.

i like (o)(o)'s but i am a legs and booty guy more. big tit's are not everything... they do this to attract the opposite sex, maybe they sell sex! i like the one's who got love to "give"!
