Whatever you do, don't buy an American made card. I am sorry to sound so "anti-American" but getting a Japanese car would be a better idea.
I would suggest a Toyota or Honda no older than 5 years old. Do some research with on line searches after you have found a car you might be interested in.
I like Honda and Toyota. Both have an excellent and well deserved reputation for quality and reliability.
Going with Riff Raffs answer, a Toyota will probably be better for a first car, more specifically a Toyota Yaris!! They are small, easy to handle, easy to insure and very cute!!!
Air-cooled Volkswagens are a superb choice. There was the Beetle, the Type 2 (Bus), the Type 3 Notchback (Coupe) and the Squareback (Wagon). You may also like the VW Karmann Ghia and the Porsche 914.
Good warranty from a dealer. There are bound to be problems.
