  • In the summer months, when people do most of their flying in the United States, there are on average about 4.6 general aviation incidents or accidents of one type or another per day. The aircraft in this statistic spans all kinds of general aviation equipment, including airplanes, helicopters, gliders, business jets, etc. Only about 21% of those include any fatalities, the majority either include non-fatal injuries or no injuries at all. An even smaller percentage of those ever appear in the national news. (Source: www.ntsb.gov) The two greatest causes of general aviation accidents are 1) visual-only (VFR) pilots intentionally flying into instrument conditions for which they are not trained and 2) running out of fuel. Item 1 underscores the importance of obtaining an advanced instrument rating, or simply landing (or not flying) when adverse weather conditions exist. Item 2 includes something called "fuel mismanagement" which includes both running out of fuel as well as drawing fuel from the wrong (empty) fuel tank. Contrast that with a recent statistic that indicates approximately 113 fatalities per day on the US highways.
