An acre is an area one furlong (660ft) by one chain (66ft)! It was once a standard size for fields - long and thin for easy ploughing.

This comes from 1 square mile = 1 section = 640 acres which produces 43,560 square feet per acre. How they arrived at the 640 acres per section figure I don't know. It is probably just arbitrary for convenience. Kinda like asking why are their 4 quarts to a gallon instead of 6.
