Given the health risks, why do women get breast implants?

    Not all women get implants because they want more attention from men. In fact, many (if not most) women get them first and foremost for themselves. For women with very small chests, looking in the mirror (especially naked) can make them feel like they are less than a woman. Some women are even mistaken for men because they have such boyish figures! Plus, most nicer clothes are made for women with at least a little bit of cleavage. That means that those women can't wear (or at least don't look as good in) many styles of shirts and dresses because they don't fit around their chests well. Sometimes the cloth is just baggy, but in other outfits it leaves a gap down which her chest is visible. Very embarrassing! And bathing suits? Plenty of women are already uncomfortable wearing them without having to feel like their shortcomings are on display. And while clothing might seem a superficial concern, remember, clothes make the (wo)man. They influence how we see ourselves - as well as how the world sees, and treats us.

    Of course, it's no wonder that women with very small chests are also nervous about what guys will think of them if they see them naked. And a lot of guys are very vocal about wanting a woman with sizeable breasts (or at least, "a handful for each hand"). And since many smaller chested women wear padded bras to make them look a bit larger, some might worry that their guy will be unhappily surprised the first time he sees them completely bare.

    Some women think that men want girls with a skinny body and big boobs. However, breasts are made out of fat. Once a women is skinny, she usually can't have big breasts. This is not to say it's impossible for women to have big breasts, but because they don't have as much fat, many skinny woman don't have natural big breasts.

    Plus women are, generally speaking, more insecure than men. There insecurity is enough to make them take the risks of getting breast implants and/or other types of plastic surgery.

    Edit: Although, I updated my question so that everyone would know I was speaking generally, I'm still getting comments that not all skinny women have big breasts. I didn't say that skinny women couldn't have big breasts. I said ,generally, they don't. All I ask, is that if you choose to rate this anwser please seperate generally from all or the vast majority. My sources come from medical professionals and personal experience on this matter of breast sizes of skinnier women, generally speaking.

    Well i'm not exactly sure about most women, but i am a mother of one and i told myself that if after i have another child, i am completely unhappy with my breasts i will have the suregery, not for any man or any reason but for myself. there's nothing worse than having perfect nice round perky breasts and then loosing them after pregnancy. I totally feel like half the woman i once was, and although it may sound weird to some, it's true. and most mothers out there will understnd what i mean, but pregnancy takes a huge toll on our bodies. i have lost weight since my pregancy and am takign care of my body and health, but having small breasts really lowers my confidence too low, although my partner says i don't need them, it's not for him it's for me, but i'll feel so sexy flaunting them for him if and when i get them

    Because we learn from the media that we shouldn't be happy with small breasts.

    Because some of us think that men will love us more if we do.

    The reality as I see it, though, is that men will consider you sexy as **** if you just love yourself and the body you are born with.

    The overwhelming majority of women get breast implants to satisfy themselves. I will be one of them. I am thin with a fabulous figure except for the fact that I have 32A breasts. I don't fill out clothes properly especially jackets and I dread wearing swimsuits. I feel like a 23 year old in a 13 year old's body. I have known and liked a man for quite some time and we hit it off recently. He is taken, which is the main reason I have not pursued him. However a secondary reason is that I can't stand the thought of him seeing me naked and being disappointed with what he sees. I think he will be disappointed because I am.

    I want to look and feel womanly. I would like to be able to wear flattering clothes and feel good about myself. The misconception that women who get breast implants are sluts or bimbos is just that: a misconception. There are lawyers, stay-at-home moms and teachers who elect to have the surgery. As for the health risks, they aren't what they used to be. Saline is harmless if the implant should deflate and they implants come with a lifetime warranty. Capsular contracture is very rare among the best surgeons' work. If the implant is placed properly and the pocket not made to large then 'bottoming out' (when the implants start to turn and the nipples position changes) is unlikely. As for bacterial infection, surgeons are educated on how to reduce the likelihood of this. 10 years of feeling inadequate are worth those risks for me. Women should educate themselves as I have before making this very important decision.

    I believe that women get breast implants to primarily improve self-confidence. However, I do not understand the fascination with having larger breasts. I have naturally large breasts and sometimes I am unable to wear certain clothes that smaller chested women wear very well (such a button shirts and A-line sheath dresses). I am somewhat envious of women who can wear those clothing items. There is also back pain associated with having large breasts, which I sometimes have.

    I feel that women should embrace their natural body type and remember that bigger is sometimes not always better.

    I am a male, and I think the #1 reason women get breast implants IS to help make them feel better about themselves. They see this picture of another woman wearing something that they like and she has the cleavage they wish they had, but their breasts aren't as perky or as full as the woman's in the picture, so they resort to breast augmentation. I just hope that those that have had it realize that they may may not be able to be the total, uninhibited woman they were with natural breasts without risk of rupture and discomfort.
    If anyone knows what I am talking about, please comment or ask what I mean if you don't know.

    I can provide links to many photos of skinny women with big natural breasts. The question assumes that there are health risks with breast implants. The silicone ones got a bad rap for leaking. Currently, there are implants that are nothing but bags of saline, not as dangerous if they leak.

    Why do they do it? Because they want the attention given to big breasts, attention that nature has implanted in us through evolution. Big breasts imply an ability to feed children, which means that might be a safe place to plant seed. Instinct.

Breast implants are best left for reconstruction, face it, not every breast cancer survivor can handle having to wear a bra with a removable prosthetic and just accept that, instead a lot go for the implants and tattooing. It is a big deal to loose a part of one's body and it takes awhile to accept that, implants are really hard to accept too, for some. Topless and nude dancers, have their own reasoning for acquiring implants, personally as long as the emotions are fueling their dance, I didn't mind slanging their fans drinks, they enjoyed the show and had no problem, the dancers that were just trying to flaunt rarely got drinks bought for them and that cut into my tips, because customers simply weren't interested, and hospitality only goes so far and then customers start looking at wait staff for entertainment. Most people in a topless or nude bar could care less how the dancer actually looks, it is the dance that is entertaining, not the actual stripping anyway. A lot of women looking to make a career out of having breast implants really ought to realize, other people are going to make money off of them too, and not even look at them, they themselves could make money just fine and just as well sagging with stretch marks as long as they are out there feeling good and having a good time dancing, and they don't even have to be super fit to do it. Women who want these breast implants because they have self esteem issues, because of dancers or other entertainment, ought to try looking at self esteem from a different perspective than the mirror gives and the clubs and tv dish out, try just being instead of comparing or trying to add up or equal to someone else, and save calculations for the bank book. The only thing disgusting about stretch marks and saggy breasts is the simple immaturity others have about it. Women have beauty about them, that if they themselves do not realize as a women, breast implants are not going to fix. I am a straight woman, and I can appreciate, and have enough confidence to survive. If you feel like a bathing suit or shirt, or other article of clothing doesn't look right because of a cup size or cup size difference, try to look at the clothing from a different perspective, it's clothing and if you are trying to show your body off, maybe the cut wasn't right try hiring a tailor first. If there is such a difference in cup size that it isn't something a padded bra or a tailor can fix, and you are suffering from pain because of the anatomical imbalance, you might look into augmentation, but, otherwise if it is a difference you like, and doesn't hurt or harm you why waste the effort contemplating and becoming a victim because of others opinions? Most people seem to be more concentrated around their money anyway, and if you were doing it because a significant other suddenly became possible if you had surgery, try choosing independence first.

    I don't think women CARE about the health risks...They like that shapely look in the mirror...and others want to 'Stand-out' from the women around them and be attractive to men.

    I think it' s their body and should be allowed to do with it what they want.

    Even though some end up being horribly disfigured.

    i personally think that a women does it for herself. i always told myself that i would never have it done but now that i have had 2 babies back to back and breast feeding both of my babies my breasts have started to sag and one of them is a whole cup size larger than the other one. now i've been thinking about doing it for myself because my husband says he doesn't mind it but i don't like the way they look

    Basically because the stereotypical beautiful woman has large breasts or not small ones.
    Thus larger breasts are good at attracting a larger proportion of the male population (some still prefer small), and also just to raise their own self esteem.

    I like large breasts, but not enough to want any partner of mine to have surgery. There is a difference between ones fantasy ideal looknig woman and the person one loves. Beauty is only skin deep. So big breasdts mauy make me turn my head (if no-one is looking) but it is the perosnality that will count in the long run.

    I have been honest albeit not politically correct.

    The health risks are sunstantially decreased. They don't use silicone anymore and the ones they use are made in such a fashion they can't leak like they used to. Of course, there are still risks involved as in every medical procedure. Men and women get plastic surgery these days to enhance tehir appearance and feel more confident about themselves. I saw a guy on Dr. 90210 getting calf implants. It's definitely not just women.

    I think it is easy to be superior about people getting breast implants - to say things like 'but size doesn't matter', 'oh they look so fake', 'what a waste of money and medical resources', and 'how can people care so much about their appearance?'.

    However, the fact remains that we live in a society where perfect breasts are flashed all over the television, magazines and newspapers until some women with less than perfect breasts (and I include myself in this) start to feel markedly inferior. I do not think that most men mind about size, although a few are capable of making hurtful comments. I think women who get breast implants in general have been got to by our perfect-breasts culture and are doing it to make themselves feel happier.

    And isn't it worth taking risks to make yourself happier?

    Personally, I am too much of a wimp to have unnecessary surgery and am caring less and less as I get older, so I would never do it. But if a woman is unhappy enough with her body to go through this procedure despite the health risks then she has my support.

    I think that the main reason women get breast implants is because of insecurity. regardless of where it derives from, ie, small breast, competition, or to attract men.the bottom line is we as women look at ourselves as not being good enough. we criticize and judge ourselves while allowing others to intimidate us. I am also young and look at all of the women all over the world who are putting their lives on the line possibly developing more problems through breast implants. we should think about when we become old, when surgery doesn't make us look as sexy and attractive as we where when we where in our 20's. should we walk around being insecure? Or should we learn to find inner beauty while keeping yourself on the tread mill and eating healthy foods? The thing about us as women is we are never satisfied with how we look. That's why we change up so much and that isn't wrong, but when our outer appearance becomes a big issue for us we tend to try anyway possible to make ourselves look and feel like the woman we want to be. The truth of the matter is we can do whatever we want to ourselves but we must remember that true happiness comes from within.
