There is a great site on the history of Coney Island: http://naid.sppsr.ucla.edu/coneyisland/ This site includes how the area got its name.... I think right now most of the "island" is connected to the main land mass, but part is still separated from the main land mass by a river, and part of it sticks out into the water, not touching any land..... but maybe it was originally an island, which has been built up over the years, while adding subway connections, roads, streets, and more area for the amusement areas and beaches, so that now there is land connecting it with Brooklyn. Not so sure. Hope the site helps out.

Coney Island was originally an Island and the land eventually merged to become a penninsula. The term Coney means rabbit in Dutch. Coney Island was basically an island with hundreds of wild rabbits when the Dutch first settled it.
