Coney Island was originally an Island and the land eventually merged to become a penninsula. The term Coney means rabbit in Dutch. Coney Island was basically an island with hundreds of wild rabbits when the Dutch first settled it.

There is a great site on the history of Coney Island:
    http://naid.sppsr.ucla.edu/coneyisland/

This site includes how the area got its name.... I think right now most of the "island" is connected to the main land mass, but part is still separated from the main land mass by a river, and part of it sticks out into the water, not touching any land..... but maybe it was originally an island, which has been built up over the years, while adding subway connections, roads, streets, and more area for the amusement areas and beaches, so that now there is land connecting it with Brooklyn. Not so sure. Hope the site helps out.

Coney Island is a former island, now a peninsula, in the south of Brooklyn, New York City, in the United States. It is one of the five barrier islands of Long Island. Coney Island is also a neighborhood in the western part of the peninsula.

Coney Island is about four miles (6 km) long and about half a mile (0.8 km) wide. It was formerly separated from the rest of Brooklyn by the Coney Island Creek, but the creek was filled in during construction of the Belt Parkway in the 1930s. The peninsula gets its name from the Dutch Conyne Eylandt or "Rabbit Island" - coney is also an archaic English word for "rabbit" - because it one featured numerous and diverse rabbits. However, hunting and resort development during the 19th century destroyed the rabbits' habitat.
