What we really need is a third party. Yes, I know we do, but the infrastructure, etc. of the two main parties is way more mature. Those two parties also band together to make it harder for other parties to gain acceptance. They spend lots of money on that and also vote to make it hard on third parties using their congressional clout. In the 1970's the US Government "bailed out" Chrysler, which was bankrupt, stating that the US needed three major automakers to promote competetion. We need to force them to do the same thing with political parties.
