I think you need a college degree in pretty much anything. Justice Studies/Criminal Justice was my major. It is a good choice because there is a built in network for law enforcement jobs in the major and most of my teachers were police officers so you can get a real insight on the career.

Many departments will hire anyone with a good background and high school diploma. However, they often offer merit pay for a college degree. Having military training would give you the edge on the competition but isn't required.

In New York City, you need at least 60 college credits or have been honorably discharged from the military and pass a written test, criminal background check and psychological evaluation.

An associate degree or 5 years in previous law enforcement. military police time counts toward the five years experience. All police departments have different educational and physical requirements. If interested, go to the website of the police department you are interested in and check their requirements. police departments that are accredited, have much stricter applicant requirements, than all others. my police department is accredited.

I became a military police officer thinking it would assisst me in a carrer in civilian law enforcement. The only thing the military can do is give you experience and a general idea of whats gonna happen at police acadamy. Getting your degree is the way to go. though in my city it only adds $1000.00 a year to your salary. thats the only reason i stayed a military police officer, I make a lot more than i would in the civillian force.

Millitary hhelps but is not usually required. As for a degree, alot of the places around me (washington state) require a bachelors degree. Try going to a school that has a criminal justice program like I did, that way you know the curriculum is based mostly on criminal justice.
