  • G'day Pinky2426, Thank you for your question. The government would like to discourage the sale of tobacco for health reasons. Tobacco use is associated with the development of various cancers, strokes, circulatory and respiratory diseases. Smokers have considerably shorter life expectancies as compared with non-smokers. • A day without a buzz is a day that never was. What does tobacco do for you? Nothing. If your going to do something bad for you, you might as well reap the benefits of the pleasure it gives you.
  • The government would like to discourage the sale and use of tobacco due to it's severe health risks for both direct users, and surrounding people. It causes cancer, circulatory problems, blindness, discolouration of skin, emphysema, strokes, and much more. Most people consider it to be one of the more disgusting smells to have wafting around an area, if there are aesthmatics around you, they can have an attack, leading to severe problems with breathing, it can make people literally want to throw up, it leaves a lasting, horrible smell on your clothes, the clothes of the people around you, an the area you smoked in. Most people don't have a problem with smokers themselves, if they want to smoke they are welcome to do it, but not near other people, it's seriously disgusting, and literally a health risk to those around you. If you're addicted, you can get nicotine gum, patches, etc and take counselling if you need it to quit, but to keep smoking will just damage yourself physically & socially, and damage the people around you physically... Bah :P
  • Sounds like an essay question to me....LOLOL The government would like to discourage the sale and use of tobacco due to: health risks to individuals (you know what they are, or can look them up), which leads to increased need for health care (so costs increase, places are used up etc), increased sick days,(pressure on industry), increases in welfare for dependants of tobacco victims. In short, increased pressure on the economy and society.

  • The fact that tobacco and it's additives conclusively causes cancer and is a menace to modern society.
  • The government doesn't just want to end the use of tobacco because people die from it. People die all the time. However, the vast majority of people in the US are not in fact rich. Lung cancer is a slow death. Meaning that the government would have to pick up the hospital tabs, at least partially, for those with lung cancer or other tobacco related cancers. Less tobacco means less tobacco related cancers, which means less money for our government to spend. It's a simple application of the social-conflict paradigm.
