My 2003 Grand Am is heating, the cooling fans will not come on until I turn on the A/C. I have checked all the relays and fuses for the fans, the thermostat opens as soon as the fans kick in, I assume it is a sensor or sending unit for

    The pcm monitors the coolant temp. via a coolant sensor on the engine when the coolant temp. reaches approx 227F the computer will command the fans on. The termostat however is calibrated to open at apprx. 195F. If you are idling the engine temp. gage will be somewhere between 200F to 240F or Half to 3/4 scale before the fans will start. If you don't have a temp gage then let the engine idle until the fans start, they should start before the temp. light comes on.

    ther is a temperature sensor on your car and sometimes I have also found ther to be a short in the fan wiring itself I suggest you dont drive this car on long distances but take it to a mechanic shop and ask them to run a computer scan on it, most times the shop will charge you a small fee 45.00 or so and then ask for a written estimate this way you can possibly have it fixed correctly or if you can then you can repair the problem yourself. I hope this helps a little.
