You're reading My friend and I were both invited to fancy NYC wedding by bride's father. One of us is attending and one of us is not. Father suggested cash as gift. Father is apparently spending $600,000 on wedding. What would be appropriate gift for each of us?

Thanks OrsoChicago for a thoughtful answer. Yes, asking for cash is indeed tacky, I agree. The father is a work colleague. Are you suggesting no distinction between the person who is attending the wedding and the one who is not? We are not in a relationship - just two friends who are struggling with how to handle the situation, so we will independently take action on this gift issue.

The one who is not attending the wedding can indeed send a more modest gift. This girl/bride must be registered somewhere. Try looking at Macy's or some higher end stores for her registry list. And, remember when purchasing the stupid overpriced crystal sparkling wine flute get two (his/hers) anything less is just dumb LOL
