My friend and I were both invited to fancy NYC wedding by bride's father. One of us is attending and one of us is not. Father suggested cash as gift. Father is apparently spending $600,000 on wedding. What would be appropriate gift for each of us?

    First, you did not mention how you know the father of the bride. Second, suggesting a gift of cash is in really poor taste. Third, I've found that people who inform others of how much they spend usually inflate the price by almost half. Finally, because you aren't closely related, you should give a normal gift of merchandise or cash between $150 and $225. Anything more is just obscene.
