  • He needs toys. WOoden spools, safe bells that don't come apart. I know, that's a hard one. Hang a large chain from the center of his cage.Large pieces of fruit. Why don't they let him out? Does he bite? Or try to fly? Maybe getting him a larger cage would give him more to do, especially if it were floor length. Then you could have ladderes and hanging gyms for him to play.
  • I have a CAG too. I used to breed them some years ago and finally kept one as a companion bird for ME! At maturity a CAG usually has the mentality of a 4 year old human. They can not only learn to speak, very well..they are considered to be the BEST talking OF ALL PARROTS...they will also put together their own sentences using the words they've learned to say. Emily routinely will ask "Whatcha doin?" I'll tell her, and she'll comment on it. Like "I'm cooking dinner." E: Oh, Ok, I love you! or she might laugh. Sometimes when we humans are talking and someone asks a question...if Emily can see what the one being questioned is actually doing...like for instance: Me.."Are you in the livingroom Carol?" Emily: "Yes" or "YUP" or "YUPPER" because she can SEE that Carol IS in the living room. If she is not, Emily may yell out "NO, Get in here!" She loves watching movies with us, and will laugh, or make other appropriate sounds, or statements, that match what we are watching...often BEFORE any of us manages to react...as with laughter. Or when it's a mystery or thriller...she might say "Utt Ohh" at the point we all know "SOMETHING" is about to happen! Now the only time I've ever said "Utt Ohh" to this bird was 9 years ago when she was a baby and learning to perch and sometimes fell off the sticks that were one inch above the floor of their baby crate. If a baby slipped off the stick I'd say "Utt ohh, you fell off!" and put them back on again. But Emily uses "Utt Ohh" to this day anytime something unexpected, or if one of the other animals does something they aren't supposed to be doing...then adding the animal's name to the mix..."Utt Ohh, Hannah, STOP! The point...your bird is very smart and needs most of all human interaction DAILY. A good assortment of safe toys to chew, climb on, and swing from, and you really do need to change them out about every other month...pull one or two, put in different ones, bring back the old a few month later. The Avian nutritionalist at the San Diego Zoo, where my EX works, told me that the BEST diet for Grays is to eat what WE eat (as long as you are eating a healthy diet without a lot of crap in it...no fried foods, low salt, no candy, cookies..sugary foods. YOU WANT TO FEED: lots of.. dark green leafy veggies, because Grays have problems getting enough Calcium! Whole grains, fruits and veggies, MEATS. (If you feed a salad that has avocado in it...BE VERY SURE THERE IS NONE OF THE PEEL FROM THE BIG PIT ON ANY OF THE AVOCADO..THIS IS VERY TOXIC TO BIRDS AND WILL KILL THEM...some people simply avoid avocado altogether for this reason, but it is only the pit skin that is a problem!) Emily loves Meats...Salmon, chicken, talipia (fish), steak, pork (not ham...fresh cooked pork..like a chop or roast) You can try serving different veggies raw or cooked..right off your plate. Seed, he told me should be more of a treat NOT the main part of the bird's food. Eating then can also be part of the social enrichment you give your bird. Music, movies, Tv can serve when no one is home to enrich the bird's life. Emily loves Eric Clapton and almost anything by The Beatles...especially Rocky Raccoon..That's one of her favorite songs...she also likes Nina Simone, but not quite as much as the other two. Enya she only tolerates, but likes some Classical. Is there a reason you can't bring your bird HOME? Daily interaction will help both with improving the bird's life...and can help with being able to let the bird OUT more...but always be sure you are with the bird when it is out...they will chew Wood...as in furniture..and also electric cords! Do not use chemical air fresheners around birds, and watch the number of scented candles you burn around them as well as NO Teflon cookwear...that too can poison your birds! Good luck, hope something here helps give you some ideas! Here's a picture of Emily-Bird and one of our Sun Conure, Jazz...Jazz can't really talk, but is a sweetie just the same.
  • right now our african grey is very satisfied with his cardboard box. he's acutually made a nest which is cute. but keeping him/her happy can be as simple as talking to him/her for 10-15 mins a day. But THE best thing to do if you can't be with him/her is put a cage on a deck or balcony (make sure there is appropriate shade, food, water, and that is's in a safe place. anyway good luck!
