Question

Help answer this question below.

I am a high soprano. Lately, when I get to a high A or above, my larynx feels like it's moving a little, like a clump in my throat. What is this? What do I do?

It could be that you are reaching your current limits and, like any other muscle in your body, you just need to exercise it more. I assume that you are working with a director, coach, or in the least an accompanist. When you warm up, start in the middle of your range (like with other parts of your body, you never want to start with extremes. Then move further up and further down. Eventually set your focus on that area around the high A, keeping space in the back of your mouth, and if you need a smile shape on your face (believe me, that helps!). Be sure to support your sound and correct your diction. Don't expect immediate results but the clarity and consistency should come. :)

you're straining - don't! if you can't get higher than an A then don't try to! you'll damage your voice! failing this ... keep your throat open and very deep breaths!
