  • Alaskas' purchase from Russia in 1876, I believe William Henry Seward was the secretary of state who made the transaction.
  • Sewards Folly was the derisive name given to the purchase of Alaska from Russia
  • It's to do with the purchase of Alaska by the US from Russia for 7.2 million dollars in 1867. People thought Seward was a fool for purchasing a frozen piece of tundra for such a high price. In the end, it wasn't really much of a folly and when you consider the natural resources up there (gold, oil etc.) the purchase was practically a steal!
