  • you don't need to be a staff person on anything to proclaim yourself a freelancer. You just need to come up with a story idea and either do the story for submission for a specific outlet; or make an appointment with an editor at a targeted publication so you can get their feedback on the idea. (Or ideas--you should have at least 3 ideas to discuss if you have a face-to-face). Once you've established a relationship with an editor by offering good ideas that result in published copy then the process of getting work becomes easier.
