The Nicean Council gave validity to the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). Before this council there was great debate over this matter, some even claiming heresy invoking something other than God the Father. The council, after long debate, came up with the Nicean Creed which is still said in Mass to this day and established that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were indeed different levels of all the same thing, God.

They (the orthodox christians) effectively consolidated the early dogma (as in rules and regs) so as "outlaw" the other early christian communities (i.e. the gnostic christian communities). The Nicean Council was the primary step to politicize christianity thus creating a power structure.
