Move!! You cannot control squirrels. You might want to try a tastier distraction for them, Put out raw or roasted peanuts (just make sure they are not salted). We had squirrels attacking and moving in several years ago. We started giving them offerings of peanuts, and they leave the house alone. BUT, they actually knock on the back door if I forget to set out the peanuts.

Got the same problem. I'm going to try number 6 shot in a 20 gauge!

Put tabasco sauce all over the parts they've been chewing.
-
Paint the wood with something that will deter them.
-
Maybe they are hungry...Feed them. :o)

Tar the base. and make sure you have a big old salt lick and a huge hunk of wood elsewhere with nuts or peanut butter or something they like on it.
-
Throw a bunch of scotch bonnet peppers into the blender, and paint the chewed places with the pepper mash. (Get a cat!)

I had a squirrel that had found his way through a space between my chimney and eave, and started nesting in my wall. He drove me nuts. I took pantyhose and cut them up to make small sacks. Filled them with mothballs and hung them in the attic. I also bought those larger mothball closet hangers, and hung one right where the little guy was coming and going; no more squirrel. Good luck.=0]
