I think she has got pregnant by a man who turns out to be gay - she has the baby on her own after he leaves her. She finds his diary and realises what's been going on and his torment. She sings to her new born child of her love for the man who will never be hers. It's such a lovely song and I'd love to ask her if I'm right...
This song is not at all about abuse or anything like that. You see, it's a song of love. Sophia is the character telling the story. She's longing for her love, asking whether the sky he sees is the same as her own, and whether he thinks of her. Then we hear things from his point of view; he cries her name twice, and then it's both of them crying out 'I'm burning' because of the consuming nature of their love. You see, he is away from her, but she longs so much for him that it's a pysical agony, and she's allowing it to consume her. She moves away later, desperate to be closer to him but is somehow farther, and in an attempt to explain her actions, she asks the listener whether she (the listener) has ever loved a man like Sophia loved him. And she wants the listener to confess similar feelings, to confess that he or she has also pined for someone who could no longer be with them.
To me, it seems as if she's trying to explain a abusive relationship she is in to her daughter, who is Sophia.
