To relieve themselves of their emotions. We know it won't make the inanimate object do what we want, it just lets the steam off a bit (so to say).

Because the inanimate object will not retaliate, unlike animate objects.

Its a way to express our frustration.

A form of relief

Probably because it is their way of venting their anger or frustration. It's better than taking it out on something or someone living such as an animal or person.
-
Out of complete and total frustration, and you don't have to feel bad for yelling at an inanimate object after you have cooled off.

Its called displacement!!! We tend to strike out at objects which are safe and we wont be punished or harmed for it!!!

I think its because they usually jump out at you like a door out of no where suddenly its there (BAM) it smacks you in the face. Or your walking along in your house with out shoes on & out of no where (BAM) you smash your toe on the corner of something. They have minds of their own they can hear us, they just can't speakith back!!(good thing)

It makes them feel better. I shout at the phone when it disturbs me by ringing and when my computer's responding too slowly, I stick two fingers up at it. I feel better afterwards.

Because they need to know who's boss, Flying Spaghetti Monster Damn It! Smacking them a few times helps, too.

-
because it makes me feel soooooo much better!
-
Because we're goofy! Actually I think there are 2 reasons - we can't hurt the feelings of an inanimate object by yelling at it, and it doesn't yell back.
