Yes - just like cats, dogs can have multiple fathers or sires within one litter.

In response to the negative feedback question from vernillat: Although I answered the question correctly, here's your answer: What do you mean how does that work geneticallly? Because dogs (and cats) have litters of offspring, the female produces several eggs per cycle. If she mates with more than one male, some eggs may be fertilized by one father and other by a different one. Each offspring will then share the genetic characteristics of the parents and therefore may be different looking from their littermates.

It's possible with pups as well as with humans... just highly unlikely. But like the other guy said, only one father per pup.

"AnswerGuy" and "BrinteyKitty" are both correct, I just wanted to make it clear that while there can be multiple sires for the LITTER, each pup will only have 1 dad. For Example, if a purebred female is intentionally bred to a purebred male, and then accidentally bred to another male.. both males may have pups in the litter but each pup would be a result of one male or the other. So the purebred pups could still be registered (you would have to do DNA testing to prove that the purebred male is the father of each pup that you are registering).

A female produces multiple eggs and each egg is still only fertilized by 1 sperm so if 2 (or even more) males get to her, as long as a sperm from each of the males finds an egg then he will have a pup in that litter.

Some breeders actually breed to 2 males on purpose, it is called a dual-sired litter. They will breed to 2 pure bred males in one breeding. Usually it is used to see what the female will produce with different males without putting the female through multiple pregnancies.

Yes they can be sired by multiple dads. It's true becasue if you have a boy yorkie mate a female one and then a chihauha to the same female 1 pup could be yorkie x chihauha and the other a purebred yorkie. Kinda weird but it's true.

What if the male is Lab and grayhound mix and the female is Airdale and Collie mix. Then what would the puppies be?
