What does it mean if a finger ring is "free size" or an "open ring"?

it doesnt make a complete loop instead has a gap making it flexible and fit a larger variety of fingers. i think

I assume it refers to a marital status. I suppose free means there can never be a marriage ring suitable to fit, which, pardon the pun, makes her a loose fit. Sorry if I can't clarify matters better. This is the best I can do.
