  • The Why: Warhol used images of "famous" people - people who had celebrity and recognition to 'flood' the senses with more imagery of same. Blurring the lines between what makes celebrity and what makes art. Kind of the age old question: does life imitate art, or does art imitate life? • Well Andy Warhol started what is known as Pop Art or Popular art. It consisted of taking popular items or individuals and presenting them in a way that questioned popular artistic ideals. Marilyn monroe was portrayed in many different ways most commonly known are the prints that are done in bright, garish colors. In a sense it was a mockery of what we, as a society held, as ideal beauty. The colors almost hint at a clown like facade that Marilyn monroe represented in Andy Warhols eyes. These works were questioning what was popular with society at the time.
