Double-breasted coats are more formal than single breasted. Usually, on a suit coat with four buttons but two holes (4/2), the top button is fastened. On a 6/2 coat, the middle button is usually the one that is fastened.

Single breasted usually come in 2 or three button models; although there are some one-button models, and four-button models are becoming more popular. For business settings, stick with two or three buttons. Less or more than this is too social. A two button only has the top button fasted.

Usually, one would fasten either just the middle or both the middle and top buttons on a three button suit. Some more artistic/contemporary types wear only the top button fastened. Some trend pushers have also attempted to fasten all three buttons.

Coats with four or more buttons are often designed to have all buttons fastened. Keep in mind that if the fabric pulls when the bottom button is fastened, then leave it open.
