Doesn't Muslim men view women as "lower life forms"? And before anyone runs for the - button..I am ASKING. I don't know that much about the Muslim faith. But to answer your question...I think anyone should be allowed to read any book they want without fear of being manhandled by some self important pig who thinks raping is okay but reading isn't. grrrr }:-(

Personally I think anyone should be able to read what they want, religious text or otherwise. I tend to think that banning people from reading or looking into other religions just shows insecurity... that they might realise that something else makes more sense or (*gasp*) become an atheist.

Yes. She should be allowed to read a Bible if she wants. Raping a woman for reading a Bible is wrong. Actually... raping anyone is wrong. PERIOD. I'm sure he even understands that. He's just trying to justify his actions by using the Qu'ran as support. That's what it sounds like to me.

I studied every major religion before choosing Jesus not christianity. I do not believe in religion. I worship from my home and I have faith in god...i agree with weezy but yes women in those country's are property of men.

Of course she should be able to read whatever she wants, I hope that one day, if anything comes out of this war against terror, we liberate some of these countries so that women can be free to read their bible and their way of life would improve dramatically.

Yes, she should be allowed to read what she wants to read. As for the punishment, that's uncalled for!

    What an interesting excuse.

Perhaps I should try that one if I ever get caught doing such a heinous act...

When it comes to Muslims, nothing surprises me anymore.

"Judge Knox found the offender believed the sexual assault was justified because the woman was considered an "infidel" for reading the Bible and associating with Christians.

"What he did was an attempt to enforce his religious or cultural views on his former countrywoman," Judge Knox said.

"Such behaviour is completely intolerable and totally unacceptable in this community."

He sentenced Al-Shawany to a maximum seven-and-a-half years in jail.

The 52-year-old must serve at least five years, making him eligible for parole in 2012."

obviously he's not a true muslim, because no religion from God, or that worships Him [judaism, christianity or islam] allows sex outside of marriage, or sexual abuse at all.
and she should be allowed because it'll either prove her religion right to herself or it'll prove the religion of the bible right to her. either way she was not the one committing a sin here.

There is no excuse for rape, the man is just another one of those bastard pigs. He should be hung!
And of course someone of one religion should be allowed to study an outside religion.

The key operating word here is 'Iraqi'. Now, take all of your preconceived notions and ethnic prejudices and put them in the palm of your hand - what do we know about Arabs (that the media so often likes to reinforce in our heads)? They are mostly Muslim. They treat women badly. Not just one or two of them, but most of them. We can't say all of them because that would be racist, and we certainly aren't racist. This is essentially Channel Nine's treatment of the issue: Iraqi/Arab/treat women badly/Islam. You got that? Good. Now, go make the life of any Muslim you see a living hell.

I'm not saying that this story is definitely false, but you only need to consult Media Watch to see the multitude of times that Nine has combined blatant lies with ethnic bigotry and cultural phobias to gain larger audiences.

What's important here is how people are reacting to this. I'm already hearing people saying stuff like 'doesn't a Muslim man view women as lower life forms'. You are reinforcing people's prerogatives to make crude generalisations like that by structuring the question as if this man is representative of all Muslims.

It may be worthy of note that the person who asked this question is a self-admitted Christian evangelist.

Now, here in Australia we have a rather large problem with domestic violence, especially in poorer areas and country towns. Like it or not, the majority of the abuse victims are White, and the majority of the offenders are also White. News stories like this exist because people who read them can look at the people involved and think that they are inherently different than they are. So, by buying into this sensationalism you are essentially helping a media conglomerate gain influence by exploiting minorities.

In Islam it's ok to view and get educated about other religions...don't judge the religion ...judge the behavior of the guy that's basing that on islam. The Good question is? Is a muslim allowed to RAPE.. the woman..that's not a muslim's behavior so that tells you that he's far away from being a muslim.

..I Am a muslim girl and by the ways i remember muslims encourage Every other muslim (doesnt make a diffrence man or woman)to read other holy books to see both the diffrence and commoness to the qoran and to have more faith to the qoran and have more respect to other holy religions..its most obviose that iraqan guy raped the woman on his own accounts and "reading the bible" was only an excuse..raping in islamic laws on Any account is an unforgivable deed and the man is sentenced to death (or he will be very lucky to live but stay in jail 4 a very long time) And to answer 'jade's question no,women in islan are not known as lower life forms , its said in qoran 'i have created the woman the beutifullest in all of creations'..and If muslims acctually go with the laws there would be no excuses 4 the media to keep going on how women in islam r so worthless...

In the muslim world, women are property and not considered people with rights. That being said, I believe that anyone should be allowed to read the Bible and pray. As the the Iraqi Muslim man, may God have mercy on his soul.

In Islam, a Muslim needs to believe in the Holy books that came before the Quran or else He/She would not be true Muslims. Muslims are actually encouraged to read the Torah and the Bible by many scholars to educate themselves. So, for this man to commit this crime and to give that excuse for it is simply ridiculous. To me it seems like a case of an uneducated person using religion as an excuse to commit a crime like many before him have done for centuries.
