I believe my memory card has data on it, but I can't access it, and it says there are 4,449 kilobytes of spaces free. Does this mean it's empty?

No. This means your memory card might have a viris or if you was copying a save form anothere memory card and you took you memory card out to early you have brock you card but if there is a viris you can get it cleard of your memory card from a gamestore.

I had the exact same problem, had to format the card. Since there's no memory card format function included in a non-modified PS2, you need either: Datel Memory Manager / Memory Manager Plus (both available with or without Action Replay) OR a mckiller style program to format. With memory manager, go to the screen where you select the device to browse, highlight the memory card and hold L1+L2+R1+R2+Square. It will ask if you wish to format the memory card. With memory manager plus, holding Square is not needed (I think).
