Help answer this question below.

I owed my previous bank money which now shows up as paid on my Chex systems report, but a new bank I went to said they cant open an account until its totally removed. The old bank said they cant help me. What can I do?

    I have been told that, even paid, the info stays on Chex Systems for 7 years (like bankruptcy). Some banks will not give you an account (more specifically, a checking account. You probably can get a savings account, however) regardless of whether it is paid or not. Some banks might, as long as it is paid. It is a matter of finding the banks that will open up an account for you.

    If you have trouble keeping your accounts clean (and I'm not suggesting you do), you might want to get some financial counseling. Or, you can find two banks that will give you a checking account and open them up at both. That way, if you get in trouble with one bank, you will still have the other account open. I have not heard of a bank taking away your account just because another bank reports you.

    Keep good records in a place you can always find them. If a bank reports you to Chex Systems for something you had nothing to do with, you can dispute it.

    Just keep looking around for a bank. I am sure one will help you out.

    I closed out my checking account last year because someone stole some checks. I realized how much nicer it was for me to use all cash for everything. It was easier for bookkeeping purposes, as well. I almost never used my checks. For the few times I do need a check, I use a money order (they aren't expensive if you don't use them all the time). I don't know what your situation is, but maybe a savings account will be fine for your needs.
