You're reading Why would someone contact another person they know nothing about, other than what they have read on AB, and think that they can shove their religious beliefs down that persons throat and "save" them? I mean, really?

So, basically, they're being selfish.

I wouldn't call it selfish, really. It's more a way of trying to handle the overwhelming fear that you better make sure you're good enough to get into heaven because if you don't, you're going to burn in hell for all eternity. It's based on fear, not selfishness. I grew up in a church like that.

I just can't comprehend that kind of life. And it is nothing against you or whatever beliefs you have. I live with enough fear as it is without piling more ontop of it. I just couldn't disrespect another persons beliefs to satiate my own fear that I am going to burn in Hell. This is why I don't "get" religion. How is living a life full of that kind of fear - and fear that makes you alienate yourself from others - a good thing? No disrespect intended. I just can't wrap my feeble mind around that concept.

No disrespect inferred. I agree with you. That particular fear is a very subtle, almost insidious thing. Nine people out of ten are clueless. As for religion, "Organized Christianity has probably done more to retard the ideals that were its founder's than any other agency in the world." Richard Le Gallienne. The church uses fear to manipulate and control people, and they are very, very skilled at what they do. They've been doing it for centuries. Not all churches, of course, but the biggest and most wealthy, yes. And your mind is anything but feeble.

That's a great quote, I like it a lot. Ultimately, I just feel that I have no place for religion in my life. It has nothing to do with being bitter or jaded or anything else. I just despise the idea that my mind or beliefs are anyone else's but my own, or that my mind will slowly and subtly be corrupted or left to stagnate if I restrict myself to only believing in certain things. No idea why I am telling you all of this, you must think I am quite insane (and you would be quite right, too) :)

It's a crazy world. Insanity is probably inevitable to people who understand that. I'm not trying to follow you around, BTW. I've been starved for intelligent conversation lately and you kindly provided some. Thanks.

It's been one of those days for me, too, actually. I got a lovely email off a new member before thanking me for a comment I left them and points I gave them for an answer. That was so wonderful - I love that feeling, of connecting with another person. Sometimes I sit in amazement at the thought that all these user names actually belong to REAL people, if that makes any sense. Real people. For some reason, that blows my mind. That we're all here, together, seeking an answer, or even to make a connection to brighten our lives. It's amazing.

That sounds wonderful, PrettyPirate.
by Dallas on April 15th, 2007
It was. It's easy to forget that real people come here and that you can really help them or touch them. It makes life worth living, IMHO :)
