If you goal is to add a new or different remote you could always add something to the units contact switch.
You can tie a receiver that has a normally open contact to the button in the garage. The same button that you push to open and close the door when you are in the garage.
Every time that you pushed the remote that triggered that receiver it would be like you were in the garage pushing the button.
You should be able to fine a receiver and remote on-line at smarthome.com
