Afterlife is more than just an afterthought. People who have 'died' for a short time and returned reported seeing the 'light' on the other side. Christians believe in eternity not out of fear but out of faith.

If there was just "nothingness" after death, there would be nothing to fear by anyone.

Christians believe in Heaven because Jesus said that He was going to prepare a place for us and that He will come again to receive us unto himself.
    (John 14:2,3)

That is called the "second coming of Christ", when the dead (that are true Christians), will rise from the graves with immortal bodies and those who are still alive, will rise to meet Jesus in the clouds with them. (That is called the "Rapture" by many Christians).
    (I Thessalonians 4:13-18)

When Christians die, their souls (mind, will, emotions, personality), spirit (the life in us from God) goes to be with the Lord, but our bodies (or ashes) will remain here until the second coming of Jesus. (When the Bible speaks of death as "sleeping", it is our bodies that are "sleeping", our "awareness" is not).
    (Luke 16:22,23).

When Jesus comes again it says, of those Christians who have died, that Jesus/God will bring them with him.
    (I Thessalonians 4:14)

Christians will say they know they are going to heaven, but they are extremely afraid of death. The animal part of us humans makes us afraid of the unknown. No Christian knows for sure what happens after we die, nobody knows what happens after we die, therefore we all fear it.

Why is this targeted to just Christians?

It depends. If you read the scriptures and find them to speak to your heart, and you believe and have faith in the Savior... then you have that hope of eternal life.

If you don't believe in the scriptures, well... there will still be an ending, but it's an unknown ending. I can only go by what I believe.
