Question

Help answer this question below.

Is it possible for a dvd to ruin a dvd player? I rented a dvd that resulted in "disk error" in both of my dvd players, now neither player will play any dvd that I put in them. This seems very coincidental to me. I tried unplugging both to reset them.

I highly doubt that it actually damaged the laser head unless the disk was warped or cracked-if you encounter such a disk DO NOT even try to put it in! If it's that old it will NOT work very well or at all-but more importantly damage to your machine is very likely!

A very dirty or worn disk may leave crud behind inside of your machine however. Use a "CD head cleaner" (it doesn't matter if it says "CD/DVD head cleaner" or just "CD head cleaner" or "lens cleaning disk" these are all the same thing, will work with any CD or DVD machine) This is basically a disk that has brushes on the bottom, which will clean your lens so that it will work again. You may have to eject and re-insert a few times if it's not accepting any disk at all.

Note that if, upon inserting the DVD, the machine spits it out like it tasted bad (without pushing the eject button) then it's most likely a mechanical problem. Part of the disk's label may come off and jam up the works. In general, don't try to play any disk that has even a tiny crack in it, or the label appears to be flaking off or bubbling off-a cracked disk may throw off a piece inside and cause major damage, a flaking off or bubbling off label may come apart inside the machine and jam up something-or even damage the gears if something jams, you don't realize it's jammed and they grind at the immovable until the player realizes there's a problem-by which point the gears may already have broken!

    It is unlikely, but possible.

    - A very dirty DVD may leave some of the dirt behind while it spins. Any dirt on the laser lens may cause read errors.

    - A badly warped DVD may physically damage the lens or transport.

    - A peeling label on a DVD may come off or rip in the transport, blocking the laser lens or causing damage to the transport.

    - A DualDisc (DVD on one side, CD on the other) may physically damage the transport, because it is a non-standard product. However, DualDiscs are most likely to cause problems with CD transports, not DVD transports.
