A particular favorite of Maya kings and priests, chocolate played a special part in royal and religious events. Maya couples even drank chocolate as part of their betrothal and marriage ceremonies. The sacred concoction was associated with Xochiquetzal, the goddess of fertility.

The Maya believed that one of the most sacred offerings was that of blood. Images from ancient religious text sometimes show Maya priests dripping a blood offering onto cacao pods.
