According to Aesop, in his fable about the hare and tortise, plodding wins the race. However, a fast start is good only if it can be maintained throughout. Sometimes a slow start is another example of better late than never. You're right about one thing, the team that gets ahead first isn't always the team that wins. That's because the team that falls behind early has made the necessary adjustments to"stop the bleeding" and catch up.

Sports are about adjustments. For instance a football team can be ahead 21-0 and the other team makes adjustments the neutralizes the other team allowing them to obtain the advantage and in the end winning the game.
