I have tried a variety of things, but coffee is my own best
option. An energy drink...they get expensive after a while.

Question: Do you get up when you wake up? Quite a few
sources say that if you turn over and go back to sleep
then you will be sleepy most of the morning.

You also might be prone to turn the
thermostat back up. And then get back
    in bed.

Yes, I have an idea! The symptoms you are describing seem to fit more closely a medical condition than a psychological one. Narcolepsy is what first comes to my mind, but based on your description, you don't meet all the criteria for such a diagnosis. Your best bet for now is to get to a doctor, maybe a neurologist, and take it from there. If it is narcolepsy, you'll want to find out soon as narcoleptics can find themselves in some precarious situations when they fall asleep!
