Was the phrase 'paying your dues' coined by any particular religion or peoples?

    The phrase comes from paying dues to a union one belongs to ...

    In other words, you can't participate in something or get the full benefit out of it until you pay your dues .. or put in your time.

    I can't swear to this but I believe the phrase came out of the renaissance by the tradesmen of the guildes of those times.
