What's the worst injury you risk at your job?

I've got a very low-risk desk job, but even I managed to get a pretty nasty paper cut on the fleshy part of my hand between my thumb and forefinger.

Being driven insane, carpal tunnel "syndrome", and muscle atrophy from sitting at a computer.

- If you're a teacher, you have my sympathy. I've heard lots of stories about school administrators who don't care about the safety of their teachers and aids, and have kids in school who really shouldn't be there. As long as nobody makes waves, they'll tolerate a very dangerous environment...

  At my high school, it was fairly normal for kids to bring pocket knives. It was kind of like bringing a cell phone: it was against the rules, but most of the kids had one on their person anyway. They wouldn't get in any sort of trouble unless they had it out and were messing around with it. Maybe it's because it was a small school in West Texas, but it wasn't a big deal. I remember one time when a kid in my class got up from his desk to go up to the board and work a problem. His pocket knife fell out of his pocket and the teacher saw it. She said, "Hey, you dropped your knife. You're not really supposed to have that here, so you may want to wear deeper pockets or put it in your backpack." I even remember at least a couple of occasions in which a teacher asked the class if anyone had a pocket knife she could use to open a package when another teacher had borrowed her scissors. We never had anyone use their knife to harm anyone. I'm in no way trying to justify the kids at your school bringing knives. I've heard of other larger schools in my area that have had some problems with kids getting increasingly violent. I have yet to hear of any stabbings at these schools, but I'm afraid that it's only a matter of time.

8 years ago? Getting shot by some idiot that a judge let out of prison because the warden unlawfully shut off his TV privileges, which of course violated his civil rights.

6 years ago? Getting blown up in some shithole 3rd world country (the "Cradle of Civilization") where they still live in mud huts because I misunderstood their ideology when I interpreted it as they wanted to kill me because I wasn't of the same religion.

Now? Accidentally shooting myself with the stapler.
Depressing.

Getting HIV, HEPc, and other bloodborn nasties from needle sticks. Catching any number of illnesses that come through our doors. If I do not use universal precautions properly, am half asleep and get reckless, this is what I face.

A bit farther out there scenario: If there is an outbreak of some new deadly contagion and I am at work the day it hits before everyone dons full isolation gear at all times, I am dead.

Another thing is I could carry something home that I am immune to and Keysha is not.

Or getting a drugged out nutter that we are unable to handle. I am on the takedown team for combative and dangerous patients. Or get a bunch from one gang in the hospital with a bunch from the rival gang.... that has happened a few times when I am at work.

I think my job is pretty hazardous.

That sounds like me and mine!! I have paper cuts all over my fingers and hands. The worst is when I get a staple stuck in my finger from where some idiot staples something to a case and didn't make sure the staple went in right!!

I remember once I worked for a temp service that sent me to a place where they wanted me to climb a high stepladder without any hands touching the ladder, I was basically like screw this I'm not falling and cracking my head open on the cement floor. Of course after that they dismissed me from that job. Good riddance. I'm not climbing a ladder with a box twice my size in my hands without even being able to grip the freaking ladder.

It is a desk job so long term risks like carpal tunnel and worsening eye sight etc

- True, but I certainly hope I won't be at this job for that long.Once I'm out of school, I hope to have a "sit down long enough to do my paperwork then get up move around and see patients" type of job.

I think the biggest risk is a gunshot. I work at an office but you never know when someone will be disgruntled enough to bring in a gun. It's dangerous because they might blow out a computer screen. That would be a lot of paperwork!
