Generally, when a dog does this, it is trying to apply a scent that it found to its face.

My boxers always tend to do this after playing in the yard. To add to Speedy's opinion, your dog might have some sort of irritant on its snout or nose, be it dirt, or other similiar materials. He may just be attempting to get rid of it by rubbing it against something because he may not be able to do so with his paws.

I have never seen a dog try to scratch its nose with its paws. maybe its too delicate an area and his paws are awfully big. a nose on the carpet is the next best bet. you are not alone. my dog does the same.

Dogs have scent glands on their heads, so he may be trying to mark territory.

Its a victory dance, that they are proud and happy. My dog does it after eating his dinner. Its like wild dogs used to do, they would roll on what they had killed to get the scent over them so that they would smell of that. I like to see him do it and then I know he is happy with what he ate.
