This is a rather vague question. It would be helpful to know what you have done with respect to this up to the present. Without more detailed information, I can only give you a rather general answer. First of all I would recommend reading the Book of Mormon with a sincere intent to understand. Ponder over what you read and then ask God if it is true. Second, I would recommend meeting with the missionaries and taking the missionary discussions. The missionaries are out there precisely to help people such as you to understand what we believe. If you do these two things you will gain a better understanding of our religion. However, I cannot emphasize to you just how important sincere prayer is in this process. The ultimate understanding that you need to make this decision will only come to you through the Holy Ghost. This understanding can only come as a gift from God and He will only grant it if you ask Him for it. The missionaries can also help you with this.

Your question concerns me. If you are joining to be with your boyfriend, you are probably doing it for the wrong reason. A conversion comes from inside. You feel that it is right and true. You want to experience those feelings on a regular basis. So, you become a member through baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. I venture to guess that that will be more impressive to your boyfriend than just joining to be with him.

I will say that I'm a convert and that alot of times people become open to hearing about the gospel because of someone they know, not because of the religion itself. I had been raise to think "Mormons" were bad. If it hadn't of been for the friends I had who were mormon I would never have changed my mind. It was later after they got me to church, and after I started taking the discussion that I thought about reading the book of mormon and praying. But once I did those things, I knew that it was true. Once I had prayed and gotten my answer from Heavenly Father, it was an easy choice. The missionaries would have never told me to pray if they didn't really have faith themselves. And my prayers wouldn't have been answered in that way if it wasn't true, because at the time the thought of converting was a bit scarey. So pray with a humble heart and a real intent to know the truth. Not just what you've been trained to think up unto this point. You might try going to church with him, and taking the discussions. That's what I did first, and it was the goodness of the members that really made me want to learn more.
