• Attempts to "time the market" are usually based on emotion and result in losses. Remember for everyone that makes money in the stock market there is someone who loses money.

• nothing you offer answers the question accurately. Timing the market and offering a flawed example are of no help...
  When the price reaches the point an investor was after... that is the time to sell.... or vice versa for losses.
  Personally I recently bought CVX at 105 then sold it at 107 ... I made a profit. In 3 trading days the buyer realized a gain of more than $2 per share. No loser....

• I made a 100% gain on AAPL and a 30% loss on BAC. Most people, when talking about stocks, leave out their losses to imply superior knowledge/intelligence.

• Additionally, the purpose of having money is to acquire items of value. Paper is worthless, as are the electrons that make up one's bank account. The reason we have these items is to exchange them for cars, houses, food, clothes, etc.
