Both are wrong. The children are less able to defend themselves, so hitting them is even more wrong.

If my children were to use inappropriate language I would discipline them with my heart, head and with love and not with my hands because it is wrong to hit people and children are people too! My wife never ever swears but if she did I would never ever hit or discipline her because of the reasons given by Mrs. Cleaver. I will also add that I love my wife more than life itself, my wife and I are one flesh, our boys come from us so if I hurt my wife I am not only hurting her but I am also hurting our boys and myself so it is something that I will never ever do.

One reason ... spouses shouldn't be "disciplining" each other. They're both adults and should be partners in a marriage.

Do not hit the spouse for they are adults but tell them to stop. The same can be said of the child until they will not listen then hit them but do not hit the adult for they are not under anyone's authority. If they are not a good spouse get divorce.

child swearing you hit them as discipline is not a crime. Corporeal punishment is legal in the US. Hitting adults as punishment is a crime and will get you arrested.

People still punish their kids for swearing? How old-fashioned.

Doing as your question implies would make me the world's biggest hypocrite! My foul vocabulary is huge, and I use it whenever I see a reason to. 'Appropriate' is a vital word in the context of your question.

The only time I've ever hit anyone for swearing was when they were swearing at MrsWitch and it was inappropriate and aggressive. They were drunk and seemed about to become violent, so I preempted that possibility by being violent myself.

I would never hit my wife. Why would I do that to the centre of my world? Short of having her attack me with a weapon I can't see any scenario that would need that sort of reaction.

Hitting her for swearing is just so ridiculous it's laughable.

But, taking aside the incongruity of your question, there really is no difference, but circumstances are all important.

What! if my wife swears at me i don't punch her in the face and vice versa.
What kind of family were you brought up in?
As kids we were threatened with beatings but rarely received anything more than a smack on the legs

I don't hit my kids to discipline them when they swear.

Anyone who does should be hit by someone twice their size.

We discipline kids to teach them how to behave in society, to teach them to keep away from danger, etc. No one has the right to discipline another adult on that level.

If you are defending either I hope that person twice your size lives right next door to you.

Obviously we have the law to discipline - but that's not what we're talking about here.

There is no difference, it's abuse in both cases, unless it's between consenting adults.

Anger is never appropriate when using discipline. Spankings are inappropriate after puberty.
