Japanese and Russian Scientists may be able to use old DNA to clone a Mammoth. Whats next? A T-REX?

YAKUTSK, Russia – Japanese and Russian scientists might be able to clone a mammoth after confirming the presence of well-preserved bone marrow in a mammoth thighbone found in Siberian permafrost, Kyodo News reported.

The scientists from the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum and Kinki University's graduate school will begin research next year to regenerate the huge mammal, which became extinct about 10,000 years ago.

They will transplant nuclei from the bone marrow cells into elephant egg cells whose nuclei were removed through a type of cloning. The process can create an embryo that can be planted into an elephant womb for birth.

Not likely on the T-Rex. Fossils are subject to mineralization.

I read something on this several years ago.

One particular problem is that the biological requirements of the embrio does not match that of the host mother. The genetic requirements of the embrio have to be catered to by the biological capabilities of the host parent. One possible outcome is that the host parent will not recognize the embrio as something natural to the body. This would lead to either failure of implantation or rejection/natural abortion.

So part of the solution is finding out whether or not the biology of the mammoth embrio is genetically compatable enough to allow implantation.

Another problem is whether or not the host mother can provide all the biological requirements for the embrio to grow into an actual viable mammoth. If the host cannot provide the protein, enzimes, and other material necessary for the embrio to grow and develop as a mammoth, then the embrio will not develop into a mammoth, or even grow at all.

It is indeed a complex problem and the answers will not be simple.
